Brewer vetoes ballot bill

By Alia Beard Rau | The Arizona Republic

Gov. Jan Brewer has vetoed 11 bills so far this session. Among the most recent was Senate Bill 1371, which would have required cities to include additional information on ballots involving a bond, sales tax or property tax.

Brewer in her veto letter said that while she shares Sen. Gail Griffin’s goal of transparency and disclosure of costs, it would be more appropriate to provide this information in the existing election publicity pamphlets.

“The purpose of the ballot is to mark a vote for the candidate or measure,” Brewer wrote. “Additionally, this bill likely will result in the imposition of additional costs on the counties by adding to the length of the ballot.”
