Surprise City Council voted unanimously to select Leo Mankiewicz for the interim post.
Mankiewicz replaces three-year Councilman Mike Woodard, who stepped down in May to spend more time with his family.
Mankiewicz will serve until Dec. 31, the end of Woodard’s term. He does not plan to run for a City Council seat in the Aug. 27 primary election.
Mankiewicz was chairman of the Surprise General Plan Advisory Committee from April to August in 2011. He has said he could be up to speed fairly quickly if city leaders chose him for the job.
