Maricopa Council backs Navajo Generating Station

The Maricopa City Council passed a resolution at Tuesday’s meeting that favors the continuing operation of the Navajo Generating Station.

The generating station, located on the Navajo Indian Reservation near Page and the Utah border, provides power to customers throughout the state.

The Environmental Protection Agency proposed the installation of additional emission control technology – Best Available Retrofit Technology – for the NGS, which would cost $544 million.

The council passed a resolution that includes an alternative recommendation for emission control. Language in the resolution states a Technical Work Group, formed by “several interested parties” recommends two alternatives, which would achieve greater nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide emissions reductions than the EPA’s BART proposal – for far less money.
