[COLUMN] Sorry set of attack ads in GOP governor’s race

What’s most striking about the independent attack ad against Doug Ducey, which apparently will get some heavy play, is what’s missing from it.

Ducey has been state treasurer now for three and a half years. Yet there is not a single criticism in the ad of anything he’s done in office. Ducey’s been a candidate for governor for some time now. Yet there’s not a single criticism of what he has proposed to do as governor.

Instead, the ad is an attack on Ducey’s character, albeit an unfocused one. And it fails to do what is the essence of any truly effective attack ad: make it relevant to the office being sought.
