Downtown Mesa to get ‘urban plaza’ facelift

Very soon, an 18-acre expanse around Mesa’s City Plaza building will be transformed into an “urban plaza,” a “town square with a twist.” Mesa’s new “City Center” is expected to tie the area together, drawing traffic into the areas around the Mesa Arts Center and surrounding attractions.

After a long input and design contest process, city staff recommended the design from the team of Colwell Shelor + West 8 + Weddle Gilmore. That design was approved by the City Council.

“The guiding principles for the ‘town square with a twist’ are to make it an ‘only-in-Mesa’ iconic space, deliver shade, and lots of it, create an outdoor living room in the heart of the city, and to catalyze and focus redevelopment in Mesa’s downtown,” said Allison Colwell of Colwell Shelor in a statement.
