Lawmakers clashed on Wednesday over contentious provisions inserted into a $1.1 trillion spending bill, casting some doubt over whether Congress will be able to pass a long-term bill to avoid a government shutdown before Thursday’s midnight deadline.
News that the spending bill released Tuesday night included campaign-finance changes and a GOP effort to dismantle part of the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial overhaul provoked a liberal backlash on Wednesday. Opposition from some Democrats, combined with resistance from conservative Republicans in the House, narrowed the bill’s path to passage.
But the spending bill contained as many provisions sought by lawmakers as those they opposed. Many on Wednesday still expected House GOP leaders to find the votes needed to pass the bill funding most of the government through September 2015.
