Lawmaker wants to triple hourly pay for prisoners

A veteran state lawmaker is pushing his colleagues to triple the wages of some Arizonans.

But before you get jealous, you might want to consider this.

The people affected are all inmates at state prisons.

And even with the raise, the new maximum will be just $1.50 an hour.

Rep. John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, said it’s not that he’s going soft on crime or criminals. In fact, he said the change was actually requested by the state Department of Corrections.
