The Pinal County Board of Supervisors last week authorized, on a 3-2 vote, the county manager to prepare a budget based on a 20-cent increase in the property tax rate. The decision obviously was not an easy one and is being blamed in large part on squeezing of the county by the state’s new budget for the year beginning July 1. Supervisors Steve Miller of Casa Grande and Anthony Smith of Maricopa were the dissenters.
The tax will go back to where it was before 2012. The county’s tax rate per $100 net assessed valuation ranks high among Arizona counties, but the difference for the owner of a home valued at $150,000 is only $30 a year. Of course, it is higher on commercial property.
