Forgive Eduardo Tinoco, Terry McManus and their staff at Athena Wireless Communications if they walk around their office at the AZ TechCelerator in Surprise sporting big grins.

The duo can now say it founded the first Arizona-based research and development company acquired by Google. Athena was the first company to sign up for the city-operated business incubator in the fall of 2009 and the first to move in by early 2010.

The company spent years developing and improving its wireless gigabit and LTE small cell devices that operate at fiber-like speeds. At the end of 2014 Google decided to buy Athena and completed the purchase Feb. 22, McManus said.
