Supreme Court ruling reverses Intel permit requirement

A U.S. Supreme Court ruling that altered the way the Environmental Protection Agency can enforce greenhouse gas rules has allowed Intel to apply for a less-stringent air quality permit from Maricopa County.

The permit is the same type the company operated under for years before the EPA issued a rule that imposed new greenhouse gas regulations onto large semiconductor manufacturers such as Intel. Prior to the EPA change, Intel, which employs about 11,000 workers at manufacturing plants in Chandler, was considered a minor source of greenhouse gas emissions and operated under a corresponding permit, called a Title IV.
