Activists hoping to convince voters to legalize marijuana in Arizona have begun collecting signatures to send the issue to the ballot in 2016.
The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, backed by the Washington, D.C.-based Marijuana Policy Project, has so far gathered 12,000 signatures, according to spokesman Carlos Alfaro.
All signatures to date have been gathered by paid individuals. MPP hired Petition Partners to help collect the 150,642 valid signatures of registered voters needed to send the issue to the November 2016 ballot. Alfaro said Petition Partners has been gathering signatures for about a week and a half since officials with MPP filed the latest version of their initiative on May 11.
Any further changes to the initiative would invalidate all signatures gathered so far.
