Bennett to enter CD1 race

Former Secretary of State and Senate President Ken Bennett said he plans to run for the vacant First Congressional District seat in next year’s election.

Bennett, a Republican who served eight years in the Legislature, said he will be free to enter the race after he leaves the Arizona Supreme Court, where he has worked since late 2014. His last day is July 10.

He is also currently the chairman of the Republican Party in Legislative District 24 in Phoenix, and was a gubernatorial candidate in 2014.

U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, a Flagstaff Democrat, announced last month that she would not seek re-election and would instead challenge U.S. Sen. John McCain’s bid for re-election.
