Legislative maneuver could undermine dark money referendum

A planned citizen referendum to reverse legislation that would make it easier to spend dark money in Arizona may be about to become twice as difficult.

The Senate on Thursday night approved an amendment to a House bill that exempts any federally recognized nonprofit organization from having to register as a political committee in Arizona. The language is identical to a provision of SB1516, a rewrite of the state’s campaign finance statutes that was crafted by Secretary of State Michele Reagan’s office and signed by Gov. Doug Ducey in March.
