California has too much solar power and it’s paying Arizona Public Service Co. to take its surplus.

The power comes and goes in five-minute increments, a significant change from an earlier program where power had to be bought and sold in one-hour increments. And under that system, there were no rollover minutes.

According to APS Vice President of Energy Resource Management Tammy McLeod, the Arizona utility will save rate payers up to $18 million with the new system.
