August unemployment dips; construction loses 600

Arizona’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dipped in August to 5.0 percent, down from 5.1 percent in July, according to the latest report published by the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.

The national rate increased to 4.4 percent, up from to 4.3 in July.

The state had a net gain of 41,900 non-farm jobs over the month. Most of the gains came in Government, which added 32,200. Eight of the 11 sectors tracked reported gains.

Construction statewide lost 600, and the sector maintains a net gain of 1,000 for the year. Total Arizona Construction jobs for the year-to-date stand at 139,100.

The Construction sector features three major segments: Buildings, Heavy, and Specialty Trades. There are currently 25,900 jobs in Buildings, up 100 from July and down 1,100 from August of last year. Heavy Construction is down 300 for the month with a total of 16,100, which is up 100 from last August. Specialty Trades dropped over the month to 97,100, and the segment has increased 2,000 over the year.
