Blames Supervisor Miller, who fires back

Former Pinal County sheriff Paul Babeu said he had the authority how to spend jail enhancement money and that directives mentioned in a recent audit were just recommended guidelines.
Babeu responded Monday in a letter to PinalCentral to a previous article about an audit from the Pinal County Internal Audit Committee that showed money from the Jail Enhancement Fund had been used for purposes other than jail enhancement since 2013, calling the story “fake news.”
According to a report from the Pinal County Internal Audit Committee, the misuse of funds goes back to 2013 and totals over $2 million. The jail enhancement fund guidelines state that at least 25 percent of the jail enhancement funds should be used to ensure adequate training of personnel and that the remaining funds should be used to enhance county jail facilities and operations.
