Picture the hyper-kinetic food markets of India.
The street is blanketed with vendors of all kinds. Walking the bustling area, it is easy to get a sense of the demographics and a feel of the city’s energy. And as the sun goes down, the street returns to silence, at least until the next morning.
This is an example of sense of place and what city planners would call placemaking. It is what makes certain cities memorable, sets them apart, and makes people feel like they are part of something.
In Peoria, they might be the branding elements of P83 or the Huey Veteran’s Memorial at Rio Vista Park, or public art installations throughout the city.
