Gilbert will auction off land it was blasted for overpaying for nearly a decade ago

Gilbert plans to auction off 138 acres of land nearly a decade after the town took heat for buying the property without a certified appraisal and at a price far above the going rate.

The town has set no minimum bid prices for the auction, although the Gilbert Town Council has sole discretion to reject any bids.

Gilbert purchased the properties for $50.2 million in a complex land deal in 2009, envisioning the land as future parks. The town has since opted to build the parks elsewhere after a parks planning process found the land to be unnecessary.
