A year later, still no construction in Gilbert on Agritopia’s ‘Epicenter’

A year ago, developers with Gilbert’s Agritopia community touted its vision of Epicenter: a nearly 20-acre urban core bursting with restaurants, five-story luxury apartments and other businesses.

Johnston Properties, the developer behind Agritopia, was set to break ground on Epicenter last fall.

But to date no building permits have been pulled for the $70 million-plus project, Gilbert spokeswoman Jennifer Alvarez said. The northwest corner of Higley and Ray roads, where Agritopia is located and the project is planned, does not appear to be under construction. Epicenter’s Facebook pageInstagram and Twitter have not been updated since 2017.
