Sen. Kimberly Yee defeated Tucson accountant Jo Ann Sabbagh in the Republican primary race for state treasurer on Tuesday night.
The position is open after the former office holder resigned for a job with NASA.
The treasurer manages the state’s approximately $15 billion investment portfolio, Permanent Land Trust and banking services, while ensuring taxpayers’ money is spent transparently.
Yee is the majority leader in the Arizona Senate. Sabbagh owns a small accounting business in Tucson
The campaign was heated at times.
Sabbagh, during one candidate debate, called Yee “a political hack and opportunist,” and during a debate on Arizona PBS referred to Yee as “the swamp.”
Yee, meanwhile, has said she is exasperated by what she called her opponent’s “emotional outbursts.”
“I believe we need someone we can trust, not someone with emotional outbursts at every given day,” Yee said.
