Some metro Phoenix cities buy a lot on Amazon, but there’s push-back in Tempe

Tempe leaders are taking a closer look at the tens of thousands of dollars the city spends with Amazon as some push back against the city’s growing use of the online giant.

There’s also concern that some of the online orders are for items the city already contracts with a vendor to acquire.

Tempe spent more than $200,000 on Amazon last year.

However, Tempe isn’t the only metro Phoenix city buying from the online giant. Mesa spent more than $300,000 on Amazon purchases last fiscal year, Glendale spent about $113,000 and Goodyear spent some $85,000, according to officials in those cities.

School districts buy online too. The state’s largest school district, Mesa Public Schools, reports more than $105,000 spent with Amazon last fiscal year.
