Public education a major topic of LD8 debate

Incumbent Republican state legislators said they were “proud” of what had been accomplished for education in the last session, although they somewhat agreed with their Democratic challengers that the job isn’t finished.

Candidates for representative and senator in Arizona’s Legislative District 8 met for a debate sponsored by the Arizona Clean Elections Commission Monday at the Florence Library and Community Center. Approximately 30 citizens attended. State Sen. Frank Pratt, R-Casa Grande, was absent and the Clean Elections website said he declined to participate in Monday’s event.

Public schools and school funding was one of the evening’s major topics. Globe Democrat Carmen Casillas, running for the House, said there’s not enough public school funding. “I do support charter schools as long as they’re meeting all the criteria, but public schools have to be fully funded so we can once again have strong children to have a strong Arizona.”
