How Jerry Colangelo steered a renaissance at Grand Canyon University

Jerry Colangelo has always liked starting with a fresh canvas.

He was general manager of the expansion Phoenix Suns in 1968. Twenty years later, he was owner of the expansion Arizona Diamondbacks.

“I love blank slates because you kind of make your own portrait,” said Colangelo, who later owned the Suns and was chairman of USA Basketball.

Now, Colangelo is painting on another canvas in the desert. He’s at the forefront of growth efforts at Grand Canyon University, a private Christian college in west Phoenix. Colangelo has been helping GCU President Brian Mueller elevate the school’s sports programs and facilities as well as its business programs.
