Nikola Motor Company is gearing up to develop a fuel cell laboratory — the beginning of an investment plan that when complete company officials said will total “several hundred million dollars.”

The hydrogen electric semi-truck manufacturer announced on Thursday that it recently signed a $16 million order to purchase equipment needed for the facility.

The laboratory will enable Nikola to develop and test the fuel cell system needed for the company’s hydrogen electric and electric vehicles. Engineers at the facility will be responsible for membrane electrode assemblies, stampings, stacks and power electronics.

The facility will also likely include climate-controlled chambers and dynamometers to allow for testing components independently and as a complete power train system.
