The city of Phoenix is developing early stage plans for a potential $1 billion Metro light rail extension to the Arizona State Capitol and along Interstate 10 into the West Valley.

The Phoenix City Council’s Aviation and Transportation Subcommittee will be briefed on light rail extension plans by city staff on May 28.

The possible transit extension is still in the very early stages. City staff is developing community outreach and is studying feasibility and financial studies and proposed alignments and options to improve transit links in the West Valley.

Phoenix hopes hold community meetings on the route starting in September and have a final report on the Metro line by next summer.

The proposed extension would run 11 miles from downtown Phoenix to the Capitol and then west along Interstate 10 to 79th Avenue.
