Gilbert HOA retracts plan to fine residents over social media posts

Val Vista Lakes, Chandler. / Zillow

By Alison Steinbach | Arizona Republic

Gilbert’s Val Vista Lakes homeowners association has backed off its threat to fine residents up to $250 a day for disparaging social media posts, according to a letter from the HOA board’s attorney.

The letters sent to several residents on Jan. 28 followed initial letters sent Jan. 10 that threatened fines up to $250 per day and the loss of facility privileges if they did not delete and cease to post any “disparaging, speculative or defaming comments” or posts that “in any way negatively impact specific individuals in the Association or on the Board.”

The most recent letter said the board will not pursue fines or privilege suspensions, but still warns recipients against making negative online posts, according to two such letters viewed by The Arizona Republic.
