The Tempe City Council will consider approving a $1.28 million project to install new fiber optic cable downtown in the Mill Avenue area.

The council is scheduled to vote on a contract to have FPS Civil LLC for the project. The company specializes in underground utility projects.

The effort aims to modernize technology infrastructure in downtown Tempe along the city’s streetcar alignment.

“The project will install new conduit and pull fiber-optic cable in the downtown area along the downtown portion of the modern streetcar alignment and on a portion of Fifth Street,” according to city documents on the project.

The council will consider the contract at its meeting on Thursday, Nov. 12.
