Navajo woman and Stanford grad appointed to seat in Arizona House

The Apache County Board of Supervisors appointed Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren to the Arizona House of Representatives on Tuesday, filling a seat left vacant after former Rep. Arlando Teller resigned at the end of January for a post in President Joe Biden’s administration.

With Blackwater-Nygren’s appointment, Democrats will again have 29 seats in the 60-member House.

A graduate of Stanford University, Blackwater-Nygren received a juris doctorate from Arizona State University last year. She lives in Red Mesa and is a citizen of the Navajo Nation.
