Mesa eyes marijuana changes

By Mike Sunnucks | Rose Law Group Reporter

The Mesa City Council will be briefed on Thursday, March 18 on proposed zoning and land-use changes related to Arizona voters legalizing marijuana for recreational use.

Retail sales of recreational marijuana will be limited to only medical marijuana dispensaries. Those sales would be allowed to happen between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. and the size of marijuana facilities would remain the same as under current medical cannabis rules. Dispensaries in Mesa are allowed to be 2,500 square feet, cultivation facilities 25,000 square feet and infusion facilities 10,000 square feet.

The proposed ordinance also maintains distancing rules imposed on medical marijuana dispensaries.

That includes being 5,280 feet from another marijuana facility, 500 feet from daycare centers , 1,200 feet from churches and schools and 2,400 feet from substance abuse centers.

Marijuana facilities will be allowed in light industrial and general industrial zoning areas, according to city documents.
