Phoenix area city wins big federal grant to build low-income apartments for seniors

A new apartment complex for low-income seniors could be coming to Surprise’s Original Townsite in 2024.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded area nonprofit GEM Housing Solutions $9.1 million to build low-income housing and provide rental assistance to residents 62 and older who make about $25,000 or less annually.

Construction on the building at Grand Avenue and Nash Street, just south of the city’s existing affordable housing complex, Heritage at Surprise, is expected to begin in February 2023 and finish in May 2024, according to documents submitted to HUD by the Housing Authority of Maricopa County.

The three-story, 108,500 square-foot building will include 99 apartments, an elevator, indoor community gathering spaces, and outdoor pet and gardening areas, the application says. It will take over a previously abandoned mobile home park.
