Apparently, a raise to $390,000 per year – making him the second-highest city manager in the state – was not enough to keep Jim Thompson in Scottsdale.

He is headed north to run a medium-sized city in Colorado.

The city manager’s Tuesday night might be dubbed “A Tale of Two City Councils.”

On Oct. 29, an hour after Loveleand City Council formally approved a contract he signed last week, Thompson submitted his resignation letter to Scottsdale City Council.

“I am writing to formally announce my resignation as city manager of Scottsdale, effective on Dec. 29, 2024,” Thompson wrote.

“The decision has been a difficult one. Working with an amazing group of professionals who truly care about the community and take great pride in serving has been profoundly enriching and gratifying.”

Scottsdale City Council previously went to great lengths to keep him, allowing him to “retire” and be rehired as acting city manager the next day in 2022.
