Surprise P&Z to review law turning old buildings into housing

The Surprise Planning and Zoning Commission this week will discuss code language updates for turning obsolete commercial buildings into multifamily housing.

The city wants to update the Surprise Municipal Code to match with recent legislative action on adaptive reuse. The Arizona State Legislature passed multiple bills last year to speed up city development reviews and drop the cost of housing by changing zoning and development requirements for cities and towns.

House Bil 2297 requires a municipality to modify or adopt standards about adaptive reuse of obsolete commercial buildings as multifamily. The Surprise City Council updated its standards in December to update its language with the legislative changes.
