With Gov. Katie Hobbs demanding Republicans produce a budget before she’ll sign any bills, it could take multiple budget proposals before a deal is done and signed.
Senate Republicans signaled this week they’re aiming to get a budget done soon. Senate President Pro Tempore T.J. Shope said Monday the goal is to wrap it up by the session’s 100-day mark next week.
Senate President Warren Petersen said lawmakers are working daily to deliver a plan while responding to the governor’s moratorium.
It hasn’t been unusual during Hobbs’ term for the Legislature to take multiple cracks at passing the budget during a legislative session. She vetoed a Republican-backed continuation budget in February 2023 before signing a negotiated budget in May of that session.
Last year, Hobbs vetoed two budget proposals before agreeing to a deal just days before the end of the fiscal year.
