By Pinal County

At the start of the meeting, in the County Manager’s Report, Leo Lew gave an update on a Data Center educational presentation by Dr. David Ebert, Chief AI and Data Science Officer at the University of Arizona. This presentation will be heard at the July 1 Board Meeting, delivered at the Board’s request to provide further education on Data Center development. Additionally, County Manager Lew gave an update on tours planned with the City of Goodyear and the City of Mesa, both of which have a history of data center construction in their communities. In the Supervisors District Update, District 5 Supervisor Jeff Serdy gave an update on the historic water agreement signed on May 27 in Superior with Resolution Copper, which focuses on protecting and strengthening the community’s water future. District 2 Supervisor Mike Goodman announced a school-supply drive for June in his district. Supplies will be collected for local schools in the San Tan Valley area, and donations will be accepted at his district office. Additionally, he discussed the upcoming “For Our Community” Luncheon on June 16, connecting county leaders, nonprofits, churches, and local businesses to help shape the future of San Tan Valley. Lastly, he announced that on July 1, San Tan Valley will host a drone show at Poston Butte High School to celebrate not only the nation’s history but also the history being made with the incorporation of San Tan Valley. District 3 Supervisor Stephen Miller gave a recap of a recent speaking opportunity that he had last week to discuss water challenges facing the county and state, with an emphasis on Colorado River water shortages and data centers. As the meeting convened to the Pinal County Public Health Services District Board of Directors agenda, Supervisor Serdy raised a discussion on item B from the Consent Agenda: approval or disapproval of accepting a donation from Regenerating Sonora for a 16-foot-by-4-foot raised garden bed system. Steven Ortiz, Division Manager for Nutrition and Vital Records, discussed that the acceptance of this donation would provide a critical opportunity to demonstrate the viability of simple and highly productive food cultivation methods and provide a pilot system showcasing the efficiency of growing fresh produce in the community and the various benefits a program of this caliber could provide to the communities that the Public Health District serves. Items 11,12, and 13 were heard together, on the Minor Comprehensive Plan Amendment from Moderate Low Density Residential to Employment and approval of a rezone from Single Residential to Industrial (I-3) located in the Town of Florence to allow for the outdoor storage of materials and vehicles related to a home and septic construction business.
