Here’s what we know about the hack of Maricopa County’s website in November

Law enforcement are still investigating a hack of the Maricopa County website where voter information was stolen.

A reported theft of Maricopa County voter data before the November election is apparently still in the hands of law enforcement, but this much is clear: The hacker didn’t get into the county’s election management system, where the county stores its election results. 

A false statement by one of the people leading Arizona’s election audit has reignited interest in the theft eight months after the event. 

Ben Cotton, founder of a Virginia-based cybersecurity company called CyFIR, claimed at a July 15 public hearing that the county admitted its election system was breached. 

The website is separate and not connected to the county’s election management system.
