Republican Congressman David Schweikert voiced concern on Friday about a new Texas abortion law that effectively bans the procedure in the Lone Star State. As opponents of abortion consider following Texas, Schweikert, who strongly opposes abortion, told Arizona’s Family that there has to be a better way.

“I think that may have a bad societal tearing effect as a way to do enforcement. There has got to be a smarter and kinder way to do it,” Schweikert said.

The Texas law is unique in that private citizens will be the ones enforcing the ban on all abortions where the heartbeat of a fetus is detected, which is usually about six weeks. And any citizen will be allowed to sue anyone who assists a woman seeking to terminate her pregnancy and could be awarded $10,000 if their lawsuit is successful.
