New fast food restaurant to replace Mesa car wash

By Mike Sunnucks | Rose Law Group Reporter

Mesa’s Planning and Zoning Board has approved a request to tear down a car wash at Baseline Road and Stapley Road for construction of a new Whataburger fast food restaurant.

The board approved the site plan request — which includes the demolition and redevelopment — at its Jan. 12 meeting.

Plans call for construction of a 3,735 square foot fast food restaurant and 2-lane drive-thru at 1140 East Baseline Road.

The land is owned by Stapley & Baseline LLC (John Hess). San Antonio-based Whatabrands Real Estate is developing the restaurant. Sustainability Engineering Group (SEG) in Scottsdale is handling the engineering and planning for the project.

The redevelopment “raze and rebuild” request was approved by a 5-0 vote by the Mesa planning panel Jan. 12.
