The Arizona Diamondbacks’ Ken Kendrick was among four MLB owners who voted against the league’s latest collective bargaining agreement proposal, according to a report.
Kendrick, the Cincinnati Reds’ Bob Castellini, the Los Angeles Angels’ Arte Moreno and the Detroit Tigers’ Chris Ilitch were the four owners, according to a report from The Athletic.
The four owners had issue with the proposed change to the Competitive Balance Tax, also known as the ”luxury tax,” according to the report. The CBT is imposed on teams that surpass certain payroll thresholds and is designed to keep smaller market clubs competitive with larger ones.
In 2021, the tax was 20% on the amount over the first threshold of $210 million.
According to the latest proposal from the league, the lowest tax threshold for the league would be set at $220 million and increased to $230 million by the end of the CBA in five years.
