Coming up empty: “DNA on gloves recovered a couple of miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home near Tucson did not match to existing profiles in the CODIS database.”
But: “There’s additional DNA evidence found at Nancy’s home that is also being analyzed, [Pima County Sheriff’s Department] said. Investigators are looking into genetic genealogy options for the DNA evidence to check for matches.”
What is genetic genealogy? DNA is tested “for markers to see if it matches” any “family members that could be related to any potential suspect, and then you can then track down that DNA sample,” says Joshua Austin, litigator & criminal law attorney at Rose Law Group. And if there’s a match? Austin tells 12News that in the case of the DNA corresponding to that of a “distant family member, then they’re going to have to do just a traditional police investigation from that point in time.”
