Councilmember wants feasibility study on spaceport

At the first Yuma City Council meeting in May, one council member voiced concerns and questions pertaining to the proposed spaceport the city is pursuing.

Council member Arturo Morales wondered why the city would conduct a feasibility study for the city pools while not having one for the spaceport. Morales said he does not want to stagnate the growth of Yuma, but at the same time, he added, the city should proceed very cautiously.

Before Morales can throw his support behind the spaceport, he noted, he wants a feasibility study to allow him to understand all that comes with a spaceport. He added that he has asked for information and he has not received a response to his requests.

“I looked at the paperwork, and it’s just not there,” he said. “I am not looking at who is supporting it. I am looking at who is funding it, other than the taxpayers.”

He asked that a feasibility study on the proposed spaceport and innovation center to be completed within the next 30 to 60 days, before moving forward.
