Phoenix council members address employee morale

moraleThe Republic regularly asks Phoenix City Council members and the mayor to share their thoughts on issues.

This question deals with concerns about poor morale among city workers. Last month, the City Council unanimously chose Ed Zuercher, a 21-year veteran of City Hall, to serve as the next city manager. From the get-go, Zuercher has emphasized the need to improve employee morale, and the council noted his dedication to employees during the interview process.

Employee-union leaders say morale has reached a new low because many workers are being forced to do more with less. They also contend that council discussions about pension reform and pay raises have alienated some employees.
