Stranded in the Philippines, Supervisor Rios asks for money, bogus e-mail claimed

In a post on the AARP website, a volunteer at a non-profit group reported that scammers had used the e-mail address of the president of the group to e-mail volunteers a message that she’d been stranded in the Philippines and lost her wallet.

People who received an e-mail today, July 23, with “Sad News … Pete Rios” in the subject line should be forewarned it did not come from the Pinal County supervisor with that same name.

The Florence office of Pinal County Board of Supervisors member Peter Rios received several calls from citizens asking if he were OK or if he had lost his wallet as the spam e-mail indicated, Lillian Martinez, Rios’ executive assistant, said during a phone interview today. The Apache Junction/Gold Canyon Independent had received the e-mail and had called Rios’ office to notify him about it.
