None agrees with president’s call to arm teachers

Students, parents, teachers and political leaders are again grappling with this question in Arizona and nationwide after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, left 17 dead and renewed calls for reform.

Five of the eight candidates running for Arizona superintendent of public instruction tackled the issue of school safety at an Arizona Talks forum Tuesday moderated by The Arizona Republic local politics and issues editor Alia Beard Rau.
None of the candidates in what has become a crowded and competitive race to become the state’s top education official openly supported President Donald Trump’s recent suggestion that schools should arm their teachers.
Three of the candidates — Republicans Frank Riggs and Tracy Livingston and Democrat Kathy Hoffman — did not participate in the forum.
