Eleven years ago, the Colorado Rockies sat 4 1/2 games out of a playoff spot with 15 games to play. They wound up in the World Series. Four years later, the Tampa Bay Rays were 2 1/2 out with five to play. They got in. The next year it was the Oakland Athletics who were five back with nine remaining. They, too, lived to see October.
These are the teams the Diamondbacks are left hoping to imitate following their disastrous stay at Coors Field this week. They lost three times in four days, getting blown out twice – including a 10-3 clobbering on Thursday afternoon – and punched in the gut the other time, a game that ended on a ninth-inning, lead-changing, walk-off homer. They also left town with two fewer dependable arms than they had when they arrived.
