Ahead of the Phoenix mayoral election on March 12, the Phoenix Business Journal asked the two candidates to answer questions related to business and the economy. Here are the responses from Kate Gallego, who was elected to City Council in 2013:
PBJ: Phoenix voters will again decide in August on the city’s transit tax. What is your view of continued expansion of public transportation and light rail in the city, in terms of overall transportation needs and future business development?
Gallego: I support the light rail system, which has been an economic engine for Phoenix. We need this to expand the system across the city so we can connect to our major job corridors. We must also support the local businesses along the light rail lines so they can thrive during construction and prosper once the construction phase is complete. We’ve learned a lot of lessons and are now better positioned to support these businesses. Right now, there are more grants and dollars being used to support our businesses than ever before. We also need to invest in our street system. I am endorsed by the Arizona General Contractors, leading voices to make sure we have great streets and address our pothole problem.
