Traffic signals, stops, and roundabouts

Who decides, and how, whether an intersection is a traffic signal, four stop signs, two stop signs, or a roundabout? Glad you asked.

Paul Basha, with Summit Land Management, has been teaching Arizona State University undergraduate and graduate engineering students those exact and other transportation topics since 1996.

Specific national criteria exist for traffic signals and four-way stops, although professional judgment and expertise are critical in the decision-making. On February 5, Paul will be conducting a full-day workshop for the Maricopa County Department of Transportation through ASU.

This will be the fourth traffic engineering workshop Paul has provided in the past two years for the county department through ASU. Care to see the student opinions of Paul as an instructor? Visit the “rate my professor” website and enter Arizona State University and Paul Basha.

More than 70 current traffic engineers in Arizona studied traffic engineering with Paul. He periodically receives calls from former students throughout the country, seeking advice on complicated traffic engineering situations.
