A new stretch of highway opened Aug. 11 in the East Valley when the Arizona Department of Transportation extended State Route 24 another 4 miles between Williams Field Road and Ironwood Drive.

The $77 million extension of SR24 was constructed as an interim four-lane expressway to provide drivers with a much-anticipated new local route to help ease traffic demands in a growing area. Construction started in November 2020, according to a release.

The SR24 extension is not designed to operate as a freeway. In addition to traffic signals at intersections, the new roadway’s speed limit is 45 miles per hour.

Back in April, crews opened the first mile of the project between Ellsworth and Williams Field roads as part of an agreement with Mesa and the operators of the nearby Bell Bank Park, a new sports and entertainment complex.
