Habitat for Humanity faces unprecedented challenges in canyon build

A tribal village at the bottom of the Grand Canyon has two new homes, thanks to a remarkable effort by Arizona chapters of Habitat for Humanity.

The Havasupai Tribe welcomes thousands of visitors each year who hike in to see the blue waterfalls along Havasu Creek.

While the Havasupai Falls are world famous, the Havasupai Tribe is notably private. Visitors are not permitted to take photographs or videos in the village of Supai, which the Tribe says is home to fewer than 500 people.

With no roads leading to the village, supplies are carried in on mule trains or helicopters. While the Havasupai people cherish the seclusion, it also brings unique challenges.

Several years ago, fires uprooted two families from their homes in the village. Members of the Havasupai Tribal Council say they were surprised to have contractors submit bids to rebuild each small home in the $1 million range.
